Girls Write Out

Sometimes I wonder if the flu shot is all it's cracked up to be. Last year I got one for the first time, and I seemed to have more colds than I've ever had in one season.  So this year I opted not to have the shot. I got sick for a couple of days, but nothing major. Well, besides that little missing lung thing.

And the doctor just plain makes me nervous. She walks into my room, flips her rubber gloves into place, lifts a smile so wicked, it could have won her Jack Nicholson's spot in The Shining, and I'm starting to wonder just how important this little procedure is to my health.

So what's the deal with the flu shot--do you think it's worth having or is it just another hassle?

I agree, I think it's a hassle. My mom got the flu shot and was more sick from that that any cold she got this year not having the flu shot. I suppose maybe as a preventative for the elderly ...

I have asthma, so I'm considered in the high-risk category that needs to get a flu shot. The last time I had a flu shot — it's been a few years — I got sick and was diagnosed with pneumonia three days later.

I'm not a fan.

I've never gotten the shot, and I doubt I ever will even though my university offers it. I had a horrid cold that took about 3 weeks to really kick, but even while everyone around me got the flu I didn't catch it myself!

My nutritionist in Pittsburgh once told me, "If you don't want the flu don't get the flu shot."

Haven't had a shot since and haven't had the flu either!

I get the shot every year and have for about the past five or six years. Have never had a bad reaction to it and haven't gotten the flu ever. Every year they try to narrow down which strains will be the ones hitting the masses. This year they missed the mark, so the strain that was in the shot is ineffective against the one everyone is getting. I still think whatever was in there has got to help some. To me it's a rather inexpensive way to protect myself even a little.

I think the attitude toward it depends on age. I'm older than the ones who have commented here so far. Just a guess.

The flu shot still has thimerisol in it. It contains mercury. I wouldn't touch it.

ALL immunizations mess with your immune system and are not good for you. I'll never have another one now that I know.

I haven't had a choice the last two flu seasons since I was pregnant. Sigh. But this year they missed it. I 've had lots of friends who got the flu AFTER the flu shot. The powers that be are just guessing as to which strain will be prevalent. Some years they guess right. Others they don't.

I agree with Colleen and Suzanne that it is dangerous to mess with the immune system. "Don't fix it if it ain't broke." The one year I took the flu shot I came down with a terrible bronchitis. Our office gave out free shots again this year, and we've still had several get flu. Many have it that lasts a week. I've only had a couple days feeling dragged down, but no flu. Skip the shot and load up on nutritious food and food-based supplements.

I am a nurse and used to work for the health department and I did flu shot clinics all over the county. The official line is that you can't get sick from the shot. I don't know. I never did, or personaly saw anyone get sick from it. But I've had a lot of people tell me they did.

Anyway, I don't take it now and I never will again. I came to that conclusion by digging deeply in the CDC website of all places.
It can have some very serious complications and like this year, it isn't always effective. It's not worth it to me.
I can only think of once that I've ever even had the flu, anyway.

Interesting discussion! I woke up this morning with a sore throat and wondered if that's what I get for talking about the flu shot! LOL!

I think Becky's right. Just eat right and load up on food based supplements. Just one question, Becky. Would that include, um, chocolate? ;-)

I had brain surgery 8 months ago and thought a flu shot would be in my best interest this year. So far, it's been the right decision. I'm the only on in my family and among my co-workers to not have the flu or even a cold. Praise the Lord for that!

I tend to get exotic, personal illnesses (like brain tumors, ha), but have an excellent immune system. I've been exposed to anything and everything, but have NEVER had the flu. I did get pneumonia once, nine years ago, but I attribute that to being out of shape, nutritionally compromised, and stressed out. So I cleaned up my act and I've been fine since.

As for me and my house, no flu shots. Ever.

This year the CDC totally missed the boat and the flu shot doesn't cover 60% of the strains that are turning up. Happens sometimes. Generally they have a great track record of prediction.

The virus in the flu shot is 100% DEAD. It is impossible to get a full blown case of influenza from a flu shot. If someone comes down with it after getting the shot, they were already infected with the virus. It has a 2 week incubation period. After getting the flu shot you may develop tenderness at the injection site and may have a slight fever, but you can't get the flu from the vaccination. It's medically impossible.

Yeah, I used to have to say that about a dozen times a day August-November. I am SO GLAD I don't have to deal with that mess anymore. Finding enough shots for all 1000+ our patients was a nightmare. The last 2 years the office was open we only got shots for the staff because it was so heinously expensive. in 2003 they cost the doctor $35 a pop, and Medicare only pays $12. Talk about losing money.

Anyone with a compromised immune system, heart disease, diabetes or is over the age of 65 really needs to have one. Influenza still kills thousands of people every year, usually young children and the elderly.

I haven't had one since we closed my dad's office, but I'd get one if the opportunity presented itself.

I've never had one and only had flu once or twice in my life, and mild cases at that.

BUT - I take loads of vitamins and at the first sign of a cold, I take zinc and extra C. I don't get sick much, and if I start to, it's gone before it takes hold.

Sometimes the base that is in the shots is egg whites... and I have a friend who is deathly allergic to eggs. Neither of us get flu shots. I have had bad sickness after a flu shot, and have decided I would rather risk catching it normally than dealing with the dead strain in the shot.

I think it is a hassle. I won't bother to waste money to get a shot that seems to backfire on me.

my mom said that was the only year she got the flu, when she had the shot. I will NEVER get it. They're trying to force kids to get it, and I will fight that tooth and nail.

Wow, you guys are a wealth of knowledge--I should have asked you a long time ago about this! I still kind of wonder if I should go ahead and get it in light of my lung problem. Seems like I may be a little more high risk than some.

At any rate, we've almost made it through another winter season. :-) Thanks for your input!

I have gotten the shot every year since I was diagnosed with asthma. I have not had the flu since then or had any bad colds. It's been probably 15 years now. My daughter had this year's crud/flu/thing was home for literally 2 1/2 weeks and I was with her for 2 of those weeks and did not get it. I also take L-lysine to keep my immune system up. I used to catch every single bug that passed by me. :)

mum got the flu shot year ago and had the worst flu of her whole life.
she hasn't had one since dad died in 76 and has only had the flu maybe once since then. she doesn't really get colds much either and shes 88.
ok she doesn't go out much either but i haven't had it since i dont know when. last major cold was about 4 years ago and i lost my voice but it wasn't the flu.
its good if its the right strain but i hear alot in america still got the flu this year cos it was a different strain to what they were imunized against.
Oh and did i say i have a fear of drs. (and i mean fear i would rather go to the dentist which i like going to than a dr)

I work in an Emergency Room and we see A LOT of the flu. Mainly children and elderly people. It's even taken out some of our nurses as well. But thankfully we take as many precautions as we can to protect us and the other patients from contracting it. I got the flu shot before I started workin, but then again I've had a sinus infection since September and I have asthma. I didn't want to mess with it, but knowing that the flu shot isn't fully effective I'm nervous that I'll pick it up. I've never had the flu that I can remember and I don't want to start now.

There are shots for the flu?
(Just kidding). I never do them, my husband always does. Neither of us seem to get the flu, so I guess the shot works for him--and not getting it works for me.
