Girls Write Out

It took me a week to recover from Justin's graduation and party weekend, but here's my favorite shot. Doesn't he look happy?

Now that graduation's over and summer has begun, we get too look forward to our vacation. Several months ago we decided to take our dream vacation, since who knows how many more family vacations we'll get to take.

We're going to Europe and the Holy Land in July! We can hardly wait. What will it be like to walk where Jesus walked and see the river where he was baptized? I'm sure it'll be a trip we never forget.

If you've been to the Holy Land--or if you were going to go--what are things you'd most want to see? We're only going to do it once, so we want to be sure we get it all in. I hope to have some pictures to show you when we get back.

But first, I have a story to finish, baseball playoffs, and two summer camps to get through. After that, Europe, here we come!

My family and I are on vacation this week. First I had with a writer's retreat in St. Louis where I got to hang out with Colleen, Cheryl, and other great friends. (We missed Diann and Kristin . . . boohooo!) Then my family picked me up and we headed south. We stopped and saw friends in Oklahoma City--those are our boys in the middle, posing with their friends who used to live in Indiana.

Today we're in the Fort Worth area. Trevor's in the pool, Kevin and our older sons are taking a tour of the Cowboy's stadium, and I'm blogging. :-) So far we've seen 3 stadiums, 1 ball game, and one Texas-sized cockroach. Ah, vacation . . . I told the boys they'd better zip up their suitcases. Now they know I wasn't kidding. Point made.

From here, we'll mozy down toward San Antonio, spend a while on the Riverwalk, then go where every the hot wind blows. Did I say hot? I'm about to dive into the pool with Trevor, clothes and all, and it's only 11:15 am. Thank God for air conditioning.

Oh, side note. At the Rangers ball game last night, they played TWO Christian songs between the action. I was floored. That does not happen in the midwest.

Are you going anywhere fun this summer?

Since many are returning from Spring Break trips (not me, mind you, but many), I'm posting my favorite vacation memory.

Our middle son, Chad, was 3 at the time, and we'd been talking up our vacation for weeks. We were planning to drive to Florida and spend some time at the beach.

So on the designated day, we hopped in the car (okay, three kids and tons of luggage. Maybe hopped isn't the right word). Three hours into our trip, we stop for a break at a rest stop, use the facilities, and grab a drink. The stop has a nice wooded area with a trail, so we stretch our legs (read: let the kids expend some energy), then jump back into the car.

Once we're all buckled in, I look over at Chad, who has this huge smile on his face. "I like vacation!" he says. "Can we do dat again someday?"

Now, it never occurred to Kevin or me in the preceding weeks that Chad might not know what a vacation was. And I guess it never occurred to Chad to ask, "Hey, what's this vacation thing you keep talking about?" But he knew by our planning that it was a fun, exciting thing we'd drive to, and in his little mind, he'd just experienced that.

If only we were all so easily amused. We had a good laugh then, and still laugh about it today, usually at the start of vacation. So, what's your favorite vacation memory?

The photo is Chad when we arrived at our actual vacation, walking on the beach for the first time.

VACATION MADNESS
I'm baaack! We were gone 16 days and it was too long to be gone from our Punky Grace. That's the reason I'm claiming for what happened when we got back to Indy. We knew the kids were going to meet us at our house, and our plane was late due to a fuel pump problem. Then we waited forever for the economy lot bus so by the time we got to the lot, we were both already impatient.

My first hint that we had a problem was when Dave said, "Do you remember where we parked the car?" What? He's asking ME, the girl who loses her car in the Walmart parking lot? I have to park in the same place there or I wander aimlessly for hours. I said, "Um I can't remember." He has this frown on his face that tells me he's hating how he can't remember either. I cautiously remind him that we realized we could have gotten on the bus on the other side so we're somewhere in the middle of our row. Big help that was. We get out at our shelter and begin to look. Here's the kicker. Neither of us can remember which vehicle we drove? Was it the car or the van. He has the van keys, he informs me, but he might have lost the others, he's not sure.

I call my Mother to ask what's parked in our driveway but my dad never went in that way with the mail so we're on our own. Well, except for dealing with their hysterical laughter. I stay with the luggage while Dave trudges through the lot. We thought it might be around C59 but the more I look the more I wonder if it's B something smaller. So when he gets back, I go off in another direction. Dave sees an Airport Authority van too and runs after it to see if someone will cruise through the lot with him but he misses it. As I'm slugging along with my suitcase, I finally hear him call. He's found it.

When I fell into the seat, I swore from now on I'd write down where that van is parked. And yes, it was the van. No lost keys. LOL Can anyone relate?
