STRANGER THAN FICTION

I love a good movie. And usually when I say good, I mean a chick flick. You've Got Mail, Dupree and Me, 5o First Dates . . . I'm hard pressed to find one I haven't seen. I've dragged Kevin into more romantic comedies than any man should have to endure. He doesn't even put up a fight.

But I broke down over the weekend and deviated from my favorite genre. How could I refuse a movie that was about writing fiction? Stranger than Fiction is indeed a strange movie. An IRS agent who hears a narrator in his head, narrating his boring life? An author who's writing the story of his life as he lives it? A neurotic writer who lives in stark fear of the blank page? Oh, wait that's not strange. That's my life.

All is well until the narrator says something about his future (no spoiler here) that forces him to find out who's writing the book so he can stop her before she writes the end. The movie had me chuckling at times (admitedly most of it was the writer humor that I so related to), included a sweet romantic subplot (the cookie scene packs a whallop), and had us talking about it the next day.

It also begged the question that's still haunting me. If a novel character turned up on my doorstep, which one would I want it to be?

I really want to see that movie. I saw the previews and think it's a fascinating idea!

Character on my doorstep ... I've always wanted to have tea and chuckle with Lizzie from Pride and Prejudice. But, Anne Shirley and I would probably find we have the most in common. At least I know, we'd both get into a good old fashioned "scrape" together somehow! :)

I never thought about that (what would happen if one of my characters showed up at my house?). I imagine that my main character would be rather ticked off at me for all that I put him through...there's a 'bad guy' in the series that would absolutely freak me out...I'd redirect him to my next door neighbor's house.

Oh that's an easy one for me...

Shiloh Irons-Winslow from Gilbert and Lynn Morris' "Cheney Duvall, M.D." series.

Sigh. :)

I've been waiting for this movie ever since I saw the trailer some months ago. The fact that it was about a novelist and their character 'coming to life' really intrigued me. Saw it over the weekend and was not disappointed at all. Some are saying this is Will Ferrell's best performance. Though I haven't seen all his movies, I can say they may be on to something. This film definitely shows a different side to an actor who's best know for zany comical characters. Though there were funny moments, I was surprised by the more serious tone. Don't get me wrong, I liked this. I just wasn't expecting it. If felt a lot more like life. Life is funny, odd, ironic, sad, exciting and a million other things I could say. So is this movie. I highly recommend this one.

Oh, I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. But I'm on the home stretch of a manuscript, and I'm not getting out much at the moment.

As for characters--the weird thing is when you DO meet them, or see them walking down the street. I've had that haappen numerous times. I stare so much and get so glazy-eyed, I just know the person thinks I'm insane. I wanna go up to 'em and stick a finger in his/her chest and say, "Hey! I created you!"

Think that would make a good opening line?

If one of mine turned up on my doorstep, I'd want it to be Bree.

the more I think about it ... I believe I could use a shopping trip with Ashley Stockingdale to bring me into the real world of fashion!! :)

A character show up on my doorstep, of any author's? I'd want the old lady from THE STAND. From mine? Hmmm....that's a hard one.

LOL, Brandilyn...I think you ought to use that as an opening line.

I loved this movie!!! (Gave it a free endorsement on my blog too! :) So many fun layers, especially for those caught up in the literary vs. commercial debate. Don't expect a Sat. Night Live sketch, though. It's a different kind of humor.

I'm really looking forward to watching this movie. I already told Bob we'll be getting it from Netflix as soon as it's out.
As for characters, I'm only on my first novel, but I'd really like to meet Tomas, my old Irish man because I could listen to his accent all day and he's a sweetie. Or maybe Cookie, the old lovable cowboy. I also really like Nicole and Jake.
Okay, I love all my good characters. I totally don't want to meet my bad guy because he's a bit insane. Yikes.
