The book world is changing fast, isn't it? Just a few short years ago, if you wanted a book, you had to go to the library or bookstore. Now, with books gone digital, it's a different game.
Never has getting and reading a book been so easy. Download it to your Nook, your Kindle, or your iPad. You can even download the new bestseller onto your computer or iPhone. You are only one click away from from being swept up in the story of your choice.
It's quick, it's oh-so-convenient, and it's even cheaper. That explains the quick growth of the digital book--despite the fact that most die hard readers love the feel of those real pages.
Mostly I read on my Nook now, though every now and then I succumb to an impulse buy when I'm seduced by a beautiful cover. How are you reading these days? Hard copy, e-reader, or an app for your computer/iPhone, etc?
I've had my Kindle about a month now. I really like it and use it nearly every day but it's been a surprise to find that the things I thought I'd like on it, I don't, and the things I suspected I would hate I love. Very strange!
1. I don't like research books on it. That's the biggest surprise. I prefer them in regular book format.
2. I don't like certain non fiction books on it. Books on diet and health. I'd rather have those in real book format.
3. Not crazy about a Bible on it. I've tried several and I prefer the real Bible.
4. I DO like novels on it. I have it loaded and ready to go for Hawaii!
5. I like books on endorsement on it but pdf files are problematic because you can't enlarge them. Doc files are better.
So how about you? Want to give me an update on your thoughts about e-readers?
Thanks so much for all your feedback on the cover. Thomas Nelson has reworked it and come up with this beauty:
As excited as I am to give away the Kindle to our readers, and I love my Kindle, I do hope it doesn't change this process too much. Or make a cover unnecessary because let's face it, we all choose a book by its cover. At least, we have at one time. It's the art that brings the book to life in a very special way. I don't want to let that go.
My Kindle came today! Somehow I restrained myself and waited to rip into it until I had my camera set up. It's so little and light! It's a little heavier in the cover but still lighter than a book.
Things I've already noticed:
Page turns are fast.
The reading experience is fun on the Kindle. I forgot I even had my new toy in hand.
It was easy and intuitive to set up. I skipped through the majority of the first instructions.
The books I'd bought didn't show up right away but I didn't take into account that it would take a few minutes to download them. I rebooted the Kindle and there they were.
The case is really nice. It has a strap that keeps it closed.
It took me a minute to figure out where the on/off slide was. To put it to sleep you just flip that switch. You bring it out of sleep the same way.
I have a feeling I'm going to be buying MORE books now that I have a Kindle. I see my husband's wince from here. LOL At least you don't have to build more bookshelves, honey!
It's going to be perfect for travel.
The buttons were easy to use and it was simple to connect to my wireless here at the house. I bought the one without 3G since wireless is so readily available.
I have some books to read for endorsement already that I can send over to the Kindle. I'll love that feature!
So now it's your turn. If you have a Kindle, tell me the things I should know.
This is the new me, friends! I reached my weight goal and just hit maintenance. Now to buy clothes! I'm not exactly sure how to dress this new body. Where is Kristin when I need her? LOL
Anyway, on the subject at hand. I've been trying to decide whether to get an e-reader. Nearly all my friends have one but I've been a hold out which makes no sense because I'm the techie of the bunch. But I do love the feel of a book. Still, when I got my latest royalty statement, fully 10% of the sales came from digital copies. Amazing!
But what to buy? I'd been tempted by the Sony reader. I liked the fact it had a touch screen and it was using the ePub format. The thing that bugs me is that all these readers use different formats. I don't understand why there isn't one standard. But Kindle as the biggest list of available books. Even some of the reference books I would normally get to research a new novel are available on the Kindle. I'm sure Dave would be in favor of getting rid of my "nest" around my recliner. That's my huge stack of research books when I'm in the middle of a project. :-) But the Nook lets you loan books. That's a nice feature.
Mike Hyatt had a comparison on his blog yesterday here. Very informative! He's a Kindle fan so I actually went to Amazon to order it yesterday and found it out of stock so I reconsidered in order to do some research. What about you? Do you have an e-reader? If so, what do you have? Any recommendations?
On another subject, I'm going to Thomas Nelson this Friday. Can't wait to see Ames and the gang! We'll probably be discussing new projects so if you have a request, now is the time to mention it. . .

Cheryl Hodde writes romantic medical suspense under the pen name of Hannah Alexander, using all the input she can get from her husband, Mel, for the medical expertise. For fun she hikes and reads. Out of guilt, she rescues discarded cats. She and Mel are presently taking orders from four pampered strays.
