Girls Write Out
Sunday, July 15, 2012
I'm not much of a sports fan, but even I get excited when it's time for the Olympics. The combination of private stakes (each athlete's story) and public stakes (countries collaborating in a worldwide competition) provide an exciting and compelling event.

My favorite event is women's gymnastics--probably because I used to do a little tumbling myself. Another factor is that the first Olympics I remember was the great '76 games with Romanian Nadia Comaneci. She so inspired me.

Watching the US Gymnastics trials only made me more eager for the Games. I'm excited to watch the entire USA Women's Team, but I have to admit Gabby Douglas in particular won me over with her athleticism, determination, and winning smile. Not to mention she placed 1st.

I'm also eager to see Michael Phelps compete in the pool again. What events and athletes are you most looking forward to?

We watched the trials too, and I thought Gabby was precious! Wow, the gymnastics were gut-renching though. So much more stressful to watch than the swimming trials. I cringed every time one of them fell.

I love the Olympics too! I like all the sports but really gymnastics, soccer, softball, and swimming.
Watching the trials my heart sunk for Nastia. Gabby seemed sweet, i like her. I'm also really rooting for Jordyn Weeber, a friend of mine grew up training at the gym Jordyn trains as and with the same coaches too!
Isn't Michael phelps in 7 races? Could you imagine if he got 7 golds?! And Natalie Coughlin, I was bummed she only made 1 event but I'm rooting for her in it. I liked her on DWTS.

I only like the women's gymnastics. The rest is one big bore-fest for me.

I like most all of them! I love that now, as a writer, I can watch many of the events I used to miss due to a job outside the home. :)

Oh, I know, Ashley and Tonya. Parts of the gymnastics trial were heartbreaking. Those girls have such a limited window of time to compete.

I'm bored by a lot of the sports too, Suzanne, but the personal stories of the athletes make me root for them.

SO true, Ane! Ruth, we always end up watching a lot of swimming too.

This is so cool! An author I respect is also a tumbler! :) I competed as a gymnast for years.
