I've been doing a lot of radio interviews lately, thanks to publicist Jeane Wynn, and thought I'd share a few tidbits I've learned along the way. (i.e. the hard way).
1. Turn off call waiting before going on air.
2. Stay hydrated to avoid Dry Mouth Syndrome.
3. Do not do interviews on cell phones unless you want awkward silences punctuated by overlapping voices, punctuated by awkward silences then overlapping voices and on and on for twenty painful minutes.
4. Too much fluid before the interview and you'll have more on your mind than answering questions. :-/
5. Note to self: Keep notes handy in case mind goes blank. It will.
6. Children and live radio do not mix.
7. Do not drink carbonated beverages while doing interview.
8. Have a fun story you default to in case interview takes a boring turn.
9. Do not drink Rock Star prior to interview which is both carbonated and loaded with caffeine. If you do drink Rock Star, pace while talking. Better still, jumping jacks.
10. When possible, do interviews with friends. It's a party waiting to happen.
The above photo is a radio interview with WBCL in Indiana. We had a blast!

Wasn't that a super day? I've been doing radio interviews the past week due to the amazing Jeane Wynn as well. I'll add one suggestion as well. Limit the coffee. Caffeine is a diuretic. LOL
Yeah, that's not a good feeling. LOL
limit coffee? Sigh. I hope I never have to do an interview! :) LOL
Thanks for the pointers, Denise. I'll keep them in mind if my turn ever comes. Meanwhile, congrats on your new book (which my SIL STOLE FROM ME when it came from Amazon and I haven't gotten to read it yet! LOL
Funny story actually, she was all excited to intro me to this "new author" she found in a bookstore and a book called "Surrender Bay". I then took her to my bookshelf and pointed out all your most recent books and she stared at me as though I'd witheld the location of the Ark of the Covenant or something. :) LOL Needless to say, the bookshelf is empty. She took them ALL!
Oh my gosh, that's hysterical, Jaime!!!
Great radio interview tips, Denise!
When I have a phone radio interview from home, I put a sign on my front door: "Radio interview in progress. Please do not disturb." This is especially important if it is a "live" interview.
Because I have a fairly soft voice, I stand during phone interviews so my voice will project better. I tape any notes, stats, etc. at eye level on the wall above the phone for quick recall.
LOL Jaime, thanks for sharing that!
Thanks for the tips, Judy. I also stand while doing interviews. I sound more energetic that way.
Conversely, Colleen probaby needs to sit down. LOL
Thank you for these tips!! I am doing a BIG interview on Thursday 2/12 ...well, big for me anyway. :)
Denise,
I just wanted to say that I read your book- The Convenient Groom
yesterday. Yes, I read the whole book in one day. I couldn't put it down. AWESOME READ!!! Also, if this book ever becomes a movie- you should ask Luke Wilson to play Lucas. I imagined Lucas looking like Luke Wilson. I guess it was because you described him as laid back. Anyway, great read!
Lynette, good luck on your big interview!
OK Chick, thanks for the kind words. Sadly, I don't know who Luke Wilson is, but I'll google him. :-) I pictured James Tupper as Lucas when I was writing it.
I'm sorry, Denise, but James Tupper is who I see my hero as. LOL.
I think he's the cutest thing.
And as far as interviews, you guys always do great.
Ok, I know I have fear of failure that is in my way. But then I read things like this and realize I have fear of success, too. Radio interviews?! Yikes.
