I've heard it said, the only difference between you now and you five years from now are the books you read and the people you meet.
So I started thinking about in my own life. Who have I met and what books have I read in the last five years that have affected my life enough to change me? The Bible is a given. I'm talking of new books--books never read before.
Hmm, the people I've met IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS who have influenced my life: Patsy Clairmont. Colleen and I went to a few of the Women of Faith Conferences while signing our Women of Faith books and Patsy was one of the warmest and friendliest people I've ever met. When she came to our town, I was hoping to introduce my daughter to her. As she was coming into the arena, headed for the stage to give her presentation, she spotted me with my daughter. She walked right over to us (we were not on the way), hugged me, allowed me to introduce my daughter, hugged her, then went up to the stage! I will never forget that as long as I live! Someone like that taking the time for us . . . .
Then there are those who understand the health journey--Beverly (waving wildly at my friend), Crystal, many of my readers, and so many others. Their courage and faith sustains me still.
My friend, Christy, who knitted me socks to go along with my books touched my heart in a real way. Thank you for your kindness, Christy!
The books I've read in the last five years that have made a difference in my life: Beth Moore Bible Studies, "One Month to Live," "You Can Make a Difference," "Redeeming Love," (does it count if it was a re-read?).
Okay, now it's your turn. What people have you met in the LAST FIVE YEARS and what books have you read in the LAST FIVE YEARS that have influenced your life?

I read the book Nice Girls Don't Change the World by Lynne Hybles. I blogged about it here...
http://hilltophomeschool.blogspot.com/2007/05/nice-girls-and-camping.html
I've read it several times since then and I still and not sure what to think about it. But I am thinking about it. I'm usually not a 'fad book' type person but this book really made an impact. It had very interesting thoughts in it. I'm still trying to figure it out.
Hmm...one of the books that comes to mind is IN THE SHADOW OF LIONS by Ginger Garrett. That book was incredibly powerful & thought-provoking.
I'm reading Les Miserables, right now, and if I read it 100 times more in my lifetime, I'll never get it all absorbed. It glorifies our Creator and Lord like no other novel I've ever read. Besides that, it's stinking long, so by the time I get to the end, I can start over and it will be like a new book, because I've completely forgotten the beginning....
People I've met...
Gosh, I WISH I could say I had met Patsy Clairmont, but I haven't. I have two friends, Traci and Mike, that have kicked me in the butt, laughed with me, cried with me, pushed me out of my comfort zone...all that in just the last 5 years! I'm looking forward to the next 50 years!
"The Prodigal Comes Home," which is Michael English's autobiography. What a story of God's redemption...
Those books sound good! Thanks for giving me ideas for new reads! *g*
You met Patsy Clairmont?! How awesome! I love her books and studies -- her writing is hilarious and teaches about God's grace and light. (Laughter and the Bible, is there a better combination?)
One book that has had an impact in my life is Stepping into Sunlight, by Sharon Hinck. I've never experienced post-traumatic stress before, but the message about God's presence and power in our lives was incredible. And the protagonist, Penny, helps me remember that I'm not the only one who doubts God sometimes. (Also, the writing in it is beautiful, lyrical and flowing. Her prose is like poetry!)
I can't pick one person who's impacted me: my parents, my friends, they've all encouraged and helped me at some point.
Same Kind of Different As Me was a book I read recently that I'd call life-changing. sure changed my view on the homeless.
People I've met in the last five years. Hmm. All the Women of Faith gals. Sheila Walsh, Patsy Clairmont, Marilyn Meberg, Mary Graham, Luci Swindoll. I could sit and learn at Luci's feet every day of my life!
Oh and the Hyatts! Mike and Gail Hyatt. What inspirations they are to me every day! Both professionally and in my personal life. I think I likely met my publisher Allen Arnold less than five years ago too. I can't remember. He makes me feel I can move mountains.
Great post. Since I've only been writing one year of the last five years, I've found my influences for that part of my life from: Colleen Coble, Michelle Sutton and Rachelle Gardner.
Outside of writing, I'd say the biggest influence for me was meeting and becoming best friends with Michele. She's just so inspiring.
As for books, I'd say The Shack and This Present Darkness (yeah, I know, sounds silly, but Peretti's book really made me think about spiritual warfare and the power of prayer!)
Ah Lynn, you made my day! I needed that this week!
YOU, for one. :) Your books opened the way for me to find my voice. So thanks, Diann!
Other books: loved Demon, A Memoir and a new book I got to endorse, Talking to the Dead. Weird title, but not a weird book. :) Amazing debut book.
Unspoken Words was terrific and I thought about it long after I finished it.
But some of my favorite books were the Tales from Grace Chapel Inn series.
And then there were .... way to many to list here. :D
I would have to say one of the books and one of the people that changed my life were one in the same... Jennifer Rothschild and her Bible Study, Walking by Faith: Lessons Learned in the Dark as well as her book Lessons I Learned in the Light.
Who better to teach us how to walk by faith than a blind woman ... and a remarkable one at that. I was able to meet her when she came to our area to do a local t.v. show and book signing. It was because of her teaching during the Bible Study that I was able to hear and obey God when He asked me to walk by faith and quit my job. It was THE best decision of my life!
....Waving wildly back!!!
Diann....I know you are not looking for this, but I can't help to think of you here. I love telling the story of how we met, how you have blessed me, and how you have exemplified the reality and huge-ness of God's kindgom---His people---here on earth.
Thanks for being His hands and feet and voice!
Love,
Beverly
Oh, my...hmmmm...
The one person I've met in the last five years that has influenced me the most is our adopted daughter. She has changed the way I do everything--her new faith helps me see mine through new, fresh eyes. Being her "mom" has made me a better one to my other children. And becoming a grandmother has softened my rough edges and given me great joy---as well as shown me a side of myself I never knew existed.
The books? No choice..."Riven" by Jerry Jenkins. "The Beautiful Fight" by Gary Thomas. "Crazy Love" by Francis Chan. "Dead Heat" by Joel Rosenberg.
More, but don't want to hog the post...:-)
I'm reading a book on prayer and the concept of praying the Scriptures. Great stuff, although I can't remember the title of the book, and I don't have it with me. Also, I was moved when I read Riven by Jerry Jenkins.
As for people? The congregation of the church my husband began pastoring two years ago. These people became our family so quickly and completely it takes my breath away!
Ane, I'm so glad you found your writing voice--but you would have found it without me, girl! It was bubbling to the surface trying to get out!!! Looking forward to holding that "baby" of yours in my hands one of these days SOON!!
Beverly, you continue to bless my heart! Thank you for your courage and faith that constantly brightens my days! Love you, girl, and so thankful for God's hand upon your life!!
This is a good one to think about. Made me realize how much has happened within the past five year.
I started writing and we moved during that time.
There are so many people and books that I can't even begin to list them, but I'm going to think about it and be grateful.
I thought about the books on my shelves that I'll never part with. In the last five years, that includes, "The Accidental Tourist" because I think it says so much about fate and how God is in the details. He brings us people to fill our voids.
And "Crime and Punishment" because the psychological truths of people in that novel and insights are amazing!!
And for people, it would have to be the friends who have stuck with me in the past five years when life has been so messy. You know you have friends when they're around when nothing is certain.
I'll take a stab at the second part of that question. Ok, the Bible is a given. Five other books that have influenced me include:
1. Chasing Francis by Ian Morgan Cron
2. 31 Days of Praise by Ruth Myers and Warren Myers
3. Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver
4. Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers
5. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards
I'm behind in reading my Girls Write Out, but wanted to say that this is such a good question that I want to sit down and not only list those people, but thank God for them--and maybe I should even write a thank you note to them.
One of my husband's partners died this a.m. on his shift as an ER doctor. We are so shocked and heartbroken. (He's approximately my age and was not sick at all.) His death is very much going to affect my life immediately.
And another thing is I think books I've read in the last five years have very much influenced and affected me--including the books from the four of you. (And I really, really liked In the Shadow of Lions by Ginger Garrett like Ruth.)
Thanks so much, Colleen, Kristin, Diann and Denise--you all have been wonderful influences on me in the last five years.
Crystal, I'm so sorry to hear the news about your husband's ER partner. I can only imagine how hard that must be for everyone close to him. I'll be praying for you!
And just so you know, you've been a huge blessing in my life!
