NEW COVER
It's always an exciting day when one of us gets a new cover. We immediately want to get each others opinion on it and this time was even more exciting for me because this is the cover for my first historical romantic mystery. I've loved writing it. Loved the setting (1907 northern California in the redwoods) and the characters. Loved being in a lighthouse again.

What do you think? Would you pick it up? Does it depart too much from my normal "brand" look because it's lighter? Would you recognize it as a Colleen Coble book? If you've never read one of my books, would you be more apt to pick this one up because of its look? Any comments appreciated!

I am sick of historicals right now so the ONLY reason I'll read this one (and yes, I will read it) is because it's got your name on the cover.

How's that for honest? LOL

wow that is a gorgeous cover. TBH no it does not look like one of your books. and of course i'll be picking it up!

it does not look like one of your books. honestly if i didn't see that you were the author i probably wouldn't pick it up. the cover just doesn't strike me. of course i know "you can't judge a book by its cover". i do enjoy reading historical fiction though so i am looking forward to this one.

I love this cover--the colors, the composition, the atmosphere. Someone did a nice job. I don't read historicals much, but if I did, this cover would grab me. Then I'd see the author's name, and I'd be reading it!

I LOVE IT! I'm curious to know what she's looking at. Can't wait to check it out!

Well, I am HISTORICAL JUNKIE and let me tell you *Jaime throws her shoulders back and raises her finger in the air* ...

THIS COVER IS STUNNING!!!!

I LOVE IT!!!! (and I don't like pink, but the pink highlights are so pretty I just melted. Someone wipe me off the floor).

I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait. I'm hyperventalating. OH! I think the baby just jumped for joy too.

Ok, all that to say ... my only thought is there's not much on the cover to say "mystery". It strikes me as a period romance (think Anne of Green Gables)

But all in all, I would totally buy it just for the cover! :)

I love this cover and yes I'd pick it up! Colleen, it's beautiful. Way to go Thomas Nelson!

I think it's gorgeous and I like the cover A LOT. (Still, I see what Jaime is saying about it not communicating "mystery"). But I don't know how you can make it look--what?--mysterious?

To tell the truth, I'd pick it up WHATEVER the cover was simply because it has your name on it. :) I love your writing, Colleen.

Beautiful cover. I'm not into that period of historical that much but I would be intrigued by the cover. No, on the picture alone I wouldn't equate it with you, Colleen. I would see it as probably a romance. Because you wrote it, I would be intrigued enough to pick it up and read the back cover to see what it's about and because it's you I know I can trust it to be a good read.

Thanks for all the comments, friends! I do love the cover. I'd just be interested in seeing what it looked like with more turbulent sky maybe.

I love the lighthouse and the model is perfect. They did an actual photoshoot for the cover and had a dress shipped in for it and everything!

At 11:23 AM, Blogger Michelle V said...

I'm biased! I would pick it up just because of the author! ;-) but, yes, the cover is beautiful!

At 11:24 AM, Blogger Jaime Wright said...

btw, I want the dress! :)

At 11:25 AM, Blogger Chelf said...

I thought the POINT was that it is NOT a mystery, but Historical Romance. I think the lighter atmosphere certainly shows that. I love the dress, and the hat, and like SketchGirl, I am curious to know what she is looking at.

I love that she is carrying a small trunk. She is embarking. Journeys are usually fraught with danger. She doesn't seem to see any of that.

At 11:28 AM, Blogger Michelle V said...

Oh, and I noticed is says it's "A Mercy Falls Novel", so does that mean we get to look forward to a possible series?? :)

At 11:30 AM, Blogger Colleen Coble said...

It's still very much one of my normal books with a mystery, Chelf. Just set in 1907 northern California. Even my hero rides of one of the early Harleys! LOL

At 11:32 AM, Blogger Colleen Coble said...

Sure is, Michelle! Book two is called The Lightkeeper's Bride.

I agree with amykiane, I would not think this was one of your books if I didn't see your name on it. Without knowing you wrote it I probably wouldn't pick it up. I think it needs bolder colors. I like the artwork with the title but the rest just doesn't grab me like your other covers. Based on the description of what the book is about I would still read it, but only because I like your writing. I think this swings too far from your typical look and maybe there is a better middle ground option to help transition your readers without such a shock?

At 11:53 AM, Blogger Michelle V said...

YAY! I love a great series!

Colleen,

I love the cover - especially the light colors. It reminds me of the peace and serenity at the shore. I will definitely not just pick it up, but will buy it!

I would DEFINITELY pick up this book! The cover is AMAZING! I'm ashamed to admit I've never read one of your books. But I will now!

*tries to come up with something to say while wiping the drool from my keyboard* Wow. I would totally buy that based on the cover! It is drop dead gorgeous!!!! The dress is just stunning and not something that's seen very often on historical covers.

At 12:43 PM, Blogger Rachel Overton said...

My daughter wants the dress.

At 12:55 PM, Blogger Sarah said...

I love this cover. I'm a big historical reader, especially anything after 1900, so I'm really looking forward to this book.

I'm not usually much of a mystery reader, but turn it into a historical and you've got me. I think it's great that this is a little different from what you usually write. It will appeal to a lot of people who might not already be your regular readers. Then they'll love it, and want to pick up other books of yours.

When will this be out?

At 12:58 PM, Blogger Colleen Coble said...

You all are making me feel better!

Sarah, my books are slanted towards romance. The mystery adds some tension to turn the pages!

Hey, my friend! It's beautiful! Does not look suspenseful like your others, but I know it's in there :)

Well, to be honest, I don't enjoy historical's at all but as an art major, the cover seems all right. I also don't find work put out by affiliated publishers all that appealing either even though I do understand that historical romance is one of those genres CBA and ECPA affiliated publishers seem to shine in because life was so much "gentler" back then. Hope that makes sense. LOL

At 1:37 PM, Blogger Colleen Coble said...

Oh the suspense is in there, Kim! Couldn't write without it. :-)

At 2:39 PM, Blogger Teri Dawn Smith said...

I'd pick up anything with Colleen Coble as the author! Yes, it's different from the others but the book's different too so that's probably good. Can't wait!

At 4:15 PM, Blogger Kristin said...

It's such a beautiful cover, but it could be a little "darker" to imply Colleen. Still, your name will sell it regardless. : ) And you may pick up some Tracie Peterson fans while you're at it. : )

At 4:27 PM, Blogger Beth MacKinney said...

The cover is very elegant and beautiful, but the title is quite small. I still like it.

At 6:20 PM, Blogger Trekkie4Ever said...

Absolutely I would pick it up!! Those are usually the ones I am looking for at the library. I do love Historical novels and with a little added mystery, sounds great!

I will definitely read it since I have read most of your novels.

At 9:39 PM, Blogger Beth said...

Love the cover!! WILL be getting this one!!

At 10:06 PM, Blogger Krista Phillips said...

Well, I would pick it up and read it! I like to read historicals (would really stink at writing one though) and this one makes me think historical romance. And because scary things make me nervous, and this does NOT look scary, I'd read it in a heartbeat (we've already discussed this, I read Without a Trace as you recommended and did fine and dandy)

All I have to say is... please don't let there be a dead body in the lighthouse! *grin*

i love the cover, but since you specifically asked, it doesn't bring to mind your typical cover style. your idea to have a more turbulent sky sounds like just the right touch to add the suspenseful undertones i associate with your name.

i'm anxious to read this book b/c of my close tie with the northern cali area. hope you enjoyed writing it as much as i enjoyed living there myself. :)

At 11:35 PM, Blogger Crystal Laine said...

I LOVE historicals, so it appeals to me as my favorite genre and I like mystery.

I think the cover is great--but it DOES NOT look like the typical Colleen Coble cover. But then, it's going back to your roots, in a way.

I can't wait to read it because this really appeals to me.

At 11:38 PM, Blogger Crystal Laine said...

One more comment--I'm with you, Colleen, in that I'd like more dark, turbulent skies for a Colleen Coble story--that suspense needs to be emphasized more.

At 8:05 AM, Blogger Lisa Faye Harman said...

I'm already hooked just from the little bits of the research that you've shared and the quality of your writing in previous books. I can't wait to read it.
If I wasn't already hooked, I would pick it up and at least read the back copy just because it has your name on it.
I think its a beautiful cover. If I wasn't familiar with your name and I was browsing for a historical, I would absolutely pick it up and read the back copy to see if the storyline intrigued me.
The cover doesn't portray mystery to me. Nor does the title. Again, back copy would be important.

I have enjoyed your books especially the suspense and mystery threads that run through them. Your covers are generally vibrant, which translates into action. When I saw this cover, I thought, "Oh no this is going to be all romance and no suspense."
I looked for the lighthouse because it is in the title
and I had to really look for it to find it. I would like to see some darker colors, the lady a bit smaller, and the lighthouse a little larger. Otherwise, I think people will think this is only a romance book.

At 1:16 PM, Blogger Deena Peterson said...

I'm shocked by the difference. If I didn't see your name, I'd pass it over--I'm not a historical fan.

At 6:13 PM, Anonymous Brenda said...

I love this! And I want that dress! This would definitely make me pick it up and buy it. It does depart from your normal covers but I like that. When I go for a historical that's exactly the kind of cover I want. I WOULD agree, that maybe a more stormy sky would bring about the mystery a bit more. But, I love it! And I actually don't think it's a bad thing that it departs from your normal covers since the genre is different.

At 9:56 PM, Blogger Amy said...

I"m really excited by this book! The cover is pretty cute, but no it doesn't look like one of your books.

At 1:04 AM, Blogger Annie said...

ok, so Colleen, I must admit I've never read one of your novels, but my mom reads them and loves them! I'm definitely more of a historical romance girl in general and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this cover. I would pick it up in an instant. it's bright and subtle, beautiful and intriguing. I would definitely pick this up even if it wasn't this gorgeous, because it's by you, but combined. Wow. So when's it coming out??

Oh, and the fact that I live in Nor Cal near the Redwoods, also helps. Premise and story is important. Don't just judge a book by it's cover, right?

At 1:17 AM, Blogger Carole said...

I love this cover! A lighthouse on the cover guarantees that I will almost always pick the book up. "Historical romance suspense" coupled with your name also has great appeal.

At 9:14 AM, Blogger Pam Sanderlin said...

Is Mercy Falls the name of the girl or the name of the town/area or the name of the lighthouse?

At 2:06 PM, Blogger Colleen Coble said...

Thanks for all the comments, friends! Passing them along to my publishing house.

Mercy Falls is the name of the town.
