MOVIES
THIS IS FROM DIANN EVEN THOUGH IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S FROM COLLEEN
My husband and I love to go to the movies (decent ones). Our kids know this and gave us a generous portion of gift certificates for the movies for Christmas, which will go a long way toward our date nights. But here's the rub. Do you all know how much it costs to see a movie? The price of the ticket here is $8.00--times two, we're talking $16!

And then there are snacks. I'm tempted to sneak food in, but there's just something, well, sneaky about that. But after eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner (we had to save money for the movie), we're hungry.

As if that weren’t enough, they even charge us for the 3-D glasses! Of course, we wear them! We take our grandkids, after all--well, most of the time. (We could pay off our mortgage for the price it would cost to take all of six of them.) Okay, so we wore the glasses once without the grandkids. And get this: After we paid for the glasses and after we watched the movie, they encourage us to drop the glasses into this big barrel for recycling!! Excuse me??? Didn't I just pay for those?!

Yet, despite all this, we go--and love almost every minute of it (especially if we're eating chocolate caramel popcorn). One evening after choir practice we decided on the spur of the moment to go with another couple to the 10:00 p.m. showing of "Nanny McPhee". By 12:30 a.m., we were laughing our brains out at Steak & Shake. We should have eaten apple pie. There was just something very Americana about it all.

By the way, we've already gone to see "Bedtime Stories," and "Marley & Me". Anybody else seen those? I'm curious what you thought. I'm keeping my eye out for upcoming flicks. I'm thinking that Bride Wars looks kind of fun--in a sadistic sort of way.

Any other movie buffs out there? Do you stay home to watch them or go to the theater?

there really hasn't been anything in the theaters lately to make me want to go. the last one i saw was the new james bond (daniel craig...drool). i only go to theaters for the blockbusters, i want to take advantage of the surround sound system for my money's worth. the way the 2009 movie schedule looks, the only one i'm definitely seeing in theaters is Harry Potter. the rest, i'll just wait for DVD. although i do miss movie theater popcorn, no matter how bad it is for me.

I love to go to the movies, but because of the expense, and a single mom's budget, we don't do it anymore. We wait and watch them at home. But, I do love movies!

We have a USA Cinema near us which plays "old" movies (new ones that have cleared the rest of the theaters and are only a month or two away from being released on DVD). When we do go to the theater, that's where we go. Tickets are still only $4 or so. It's a nice theater, same food, same services. Why pay double price for the same thing? We're so behind on what's out anyway, it doesn't make a difference to us!

Besides, I am officially a cheapskate! :-)

Did you like Marley and Me? My daughter and I were at the hairdresser's and a grandma came in with her two grandsons and she was furious. They'd walked out of the movie because of language and content?? They were pretty small kids, and it was rated PG?? I told her to check movies at pluggedinonline.com from now on!

That sounds like a perfect solution, Rachel! Who cares if the movies have been out a little while, if you can get the tickets half price!

I agree with your friend, I don't think Marley & Me was suitable for children. There were some scenes that were definitely inappropriate to my way of thinking.

Pluggedinonline is a great way to know for sure! We usually check that before going to a movie. We did NOT check on Marley & Me, however, because everything we'd seen and read made it look like a kid's movie. Just goes to show we're better off checking first.

My husband loves and adores going to the theater for movies, but I am more practical about the expense. We sort of compromise and mostly go see the "big name" movies at the theater. We saw Quantum of Solace late last year and then Marley and Me between Christmas and New Years. I cried like a baby during Marley. I had read the book and bawled, so I should have remembered to bring Kleenex :)

We do Netflix also, and I prefer to watch the majority of my movies that way. It's just so much cheaper and we don't spend money, as you said, on tickets plus drinks and popcorn. There is something though, about watching a "big screen", epic kind of movie, on the big screen though. :)

Have a great day!

my husband is extremlely picky about sound, so his boss gave him expensive surround speakers for xmas a few years ago then we bought a 42" HD LCD Tv and now I can hardly drag him to the theatre. He figures for the price of tickets (we never buy food we just eat a lot b4 so we're not tempted) we can buy the dvd when it comes out.

We did go see Madagascar 2 but that's 'cause the youth kids convinced him! :)

We took our two teen boys and our oldest son's girlfriend with us to see Bedtime Stories last Sunday after church. Loved it! Thought it was a very cute movie.

Didn't care for the price of tickets or the cost of the calorie-laden popcorn...and I was doing so well, too...

Matinee prices jumped from $4.50 to $6.00, plus $6.75 for popcorn. Oy!

Good thing we go only a few times a year.

And, yes, Bride Wars does look cute, but then again, I love a good chick flick.

I rarely go to the theater because I can't stand to hear people crunching their popcorn, lol. It drives me batty and I can only hear that, not the movie. I make my DH take the kids to see them and he and I just rent what we want to see when it comes out on DVD. I do miss the movie theater popcorn in all it's unhealthy yumminess though. :)

Sorry we don't go to the movies. Our movie theater the new one, during summer offers older children's movies for a buck during the day, from like 11am til 3/4 I think. But we still don't make them either. The last movie we went to was before we got married, I think it was the Sharon Stone western(which we hated). I just can't see spending the money. If I wait I can buy the DVD for the price of the movie and watch it as often as I want and then if I want to rewind to see a scene again and again I can....

So I'm sorry I can't really comment on it. We kept saying we are going to the movies but just never seem to make it.

Glad you enjoy though.
hugs,
WendyK
PS I know they did a news piece that some theaters are cutting rates during certain times of the month and all because of the way things are.

hugs,
WendyK

Hey, Wendy, thanks for the tip! I hadn't heard that--about the price reduction thing. I'll keep my eyes open for that!

After reading all your posts, I'm feeling a little guilty for wasting money on the movies. Maybe we'll cut back a little--after we use up all our gift certificates. *g*

Thanks for your comments!

I love going to the movies, lately I've seen Madagascar 2 (rating 5/10), Bolt (6/10),and one other but I can't remember the name. Want to see the Tale of Despereaux, Bride Wars sounds like double trouble of crazy bride. Also want to Confessions of a Shopaholic. DVDs are good for movie that aren't released in theatres. You just can't get past the experience of seeing a movie with friends at a theatre with surround sound :)

For a while my husband and I were going every week, now we go about every two weeks. We enjoy seeing most all movies when they are first released. I buy the tickets for both movie houses at Costco, they work out for $3-4 cheaper depending on the movie house. Also he works for Cisco and they offer employee discounts on the popcorn, etc - so we are fortunate in that regard.

Frost/Nixon is very good.

I love movies! Right now I don't have time to watch them like I'd prefer to, but I know it's just this period of my life and it'll pass and someday I'll be able to movie the day away again.

I don't watch much tv anymore either (I try to make time for Jon & Kate plus Eight though) so I don't know what's even out in the theaters. I prefer old movies anyway, from the 40's.

Oh! And I always sneak in bottled water to the movies (when I go!)

Suzanne, I can relate! I totally don't like to watch TV at home--well, I didn't until I started knitting--but I love the movies! AND I LOVE to watch old movies! Our kids grew up on old movies.

I remember one time our son was in about sixth grade. He brought a friend home and said, "Want to watch a Jerry Lewis movie?" The kid turned to him and said, "Who's that?"

That's when it occurred to me that not everyone watched old movies. LOL

Yeah, we usually wait for the cheap theater I mentioned earlier because we're so busy (and cheap!). But even so, we usually wait for DVD. But most of the time, we pass up current movies for stuff from the 40s and 50s. I have a very unique 14-yr-old who prefers Deborah Kerr, Gene Kelly, Doris Day, Carey Grant, Judy Garland, the Hepburns, and Frank Sinatra (musicals). My Columbia House membership sees me waaaayyy more often than the video store or any theater!

Rachel, that sounds like my list of favorites. I love the classics.

I don't mind going to the cheaper theaters that aren't as nice and get the movies a little later. $3, I can do. I hate buying movies on DVD because I would rather spend that $20 on a book.

I will go to the big theater if I plan a fun night with friends that I don't see often (we're going for Shopaholic) and sometimes my parents treat me (Mom and I are going to Bride Wars soon). Most of the time, I'd rather just watch TV shows. I want a continuing story! (and my attention span is really only about 40 minutes- the length of one TV show without commercials)

I LOVE the movies--the whole experience. It's just not the same from the couch! I go more than I should, but my recent fave was Doubt with Meryl Streep. I'm more of a dumb humor or romantic comedy type. I avoid sad or thought-provoking.
; ) So I didn't want to see Doubt. But I LOVED it. It's stuck with me. It is of serious subject matter, but it has humor and such amazing acting. Interesting story on a lot of levels. And to see Meryl Streep in that role...UNREAL! She was just amazing. I loved her character. And it inspired conversation after it. I talked to a student who had seen it, and she concurred. She said, "My mom and I talked the whole way home about it." It's different, but highly recommended.

ok, so this is the perfect post for me to comment on! :-)

I'm a movie freak. I conquered my fear of goign to the movies alone a long time ago and now I go by myself ALL THE TIME!
Here are my reviews:
Benjamin Button: saw it last week; FANTASTIC! Kind of weird in the whole aging backward thing, but it was touching, and beautifully made. Cate Blanchett is SUPERB!
Bride Wars: Saw it yesterday. SURPRISINGLY GREAT! i was surprised because i thought it might kinda cheesy and predictable and cliche. In places, yet, but mostly, no. It was a great story about best friends who risk their friendship for the perfect wedding, but in the end, they realize that they're not perfect and life isn't perfect, so why doesn't the wedding have to be? It touched my heart as a single girl, always dreaming about the perfect wedding and helped me realize that God has someone great in mind that will make my life complete, but the wedding can be a disaster for all I care!

I also saw 4 Christmases... it was ok. I love reese witherspoon, and she was pretty good, but this one can wait for Netflix.

Does that help?

I plan on seeing COnfessions of a Shopaholic and He's Just Not that Into You, plus The Soloist and Doubt, New In Town, and Last Chance Harvey. All of them come out in the next few weeks/months. The Soloist looks FABULOUS!

Can you tell I love movies???

The last movie I saw was FIREPROOF (see it....an amazing movie and one of the few I've seen that didn't have offensive content in it.)

I want to see Marley and Bride Wars but I am sad that more and more language is allowed in a PG movie. It use to be if something was rated PG it only had mild offenses.

At 2:35 PM, Blogger Annie said...

Bride wars surprised me with how clean it is.I'm pretty sure it's PG. There were a few insinuations of words, but not the actual word itself. No blatant sex or anything either, which surprised me.

And yes, fireproof is FANTASTIC!!!! i'm showing it to my high schoolers when we do our relationship unit in bible study next month. It's so worth it.

At 6:22 PM, Blogger Diann Hunt said...

I LOVED Fireproof!!!! I totally agree that it was a fantastic movie!!!

We took the grandkids this weekend to see, "Tale of Despereaux." Really cute movie. I have to admit, I'm a little tired of mouse/rat movies, but it had a good message, nonetheless.

I love, love, love movies. If I could go to the theater more often I would. I love our new "cheap theater" - $1.50 per ticket.

I haven't seen the movies you mentioned, nor do I really want to. Bride Wars, sorry but this is my opinion, looks absolutely horrible. If I were you I'd save that $16 and wait for it to come out on DVD and rent it for $5, if you absolutely must see it. I can't get over the fact that both women are supposed to start out as best friends since childhood at the start of the movie. Not a movie I want to see.

I'm really looking forward to Inkheart. It looks absolutely awesome.

My hubby has this THING about going to the movies...he has to have a soda, popcorn, and a candy...so a trip for us can run $40 or so.

We vote as a family...renter or big screen. Most Christian films we go to support them in the theater, and we love superhero flicks in the theater...

rarely do we shell out money for a chick flick, but once in awhile my girls and I will do a mom and daughter day and take in the matinee with no goodies, then lunch afterward.

We're thinking Bride Wars is it, although I'm wanting to see He's Just Not That Into You:-)
