Okay, look at this. This is either my Bill Gates/beauty & the geek theory, the increase in vaccines or both in CA.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The increasing number of autism cases seen in California since the 1990s is in large part real, not simply the result of changes in diagnostic criteria or in how autism cases are counted, new research suggests.

This study is the first to assess whether the autism trends in California might be explained by changes in age at diagnosis or by inclusion of milder cases, Dr. Irva Hertz-Picciotto and Dr. Lora Delwiche, from the University of California, Davis, note.

Using data from the California Department of Development Services, the researchers found that autism rates among children aged 5 years or younger rose steadily from 0.8 per 10,000 children born in California in 1990 to 11.2 per 10,000 children born in 2006.

The cumulative incidence per 10,000 births climbed from 6.2 in 1990 to 42.5 in 2001.

The proportion of cases that were diagnosed by 5 years of age rose only slightly from 54 percent to 61 percent for 1990 to 1996 births, according to a report in the January issue of Epidemiology.

A change in the age at diagnosis could explain 12 percent of the increase in autism rates, while inclusion of milder cases could explain 56 percent.

"With evidence of a leveling off, the possibility of a true increase in (autism) incidence deserves serious consideration," the investigators emphasize.

"It's time to start looking for the environmental culprits responsible for the remarkable increase in the rate of autism in California," Hertz-Picciotto added in a statement.

Interesting. I don't know very much about Autism, but my mom works in a special education classroom, so she's seen a lot of autism. I don't even remember going to school with anyone who was autistic, and we're talking, only like 15 years ago. Now each school district has an entire class of students with autism. How is this happening?

A lot of people are speculating it is caused by vaccines, which makes sense except that forty years ago vaccines were stronger, and there were fewer cases of autism. My mom works with a pediatrician who believes it is because of pollution. He has been quoted in a few books regarding the use of certain minerals to "detox" the body from the affects of pollution. I'm always skeptical of such things and refer to my mother as "Dr. Quinn," but my brother who is 23 and has a lot of learning disabilities, has been taking these minerals for about two months. The guy has always spelled like a five year old despite how many special ed classes and innovative teaching techniques he's been subjected to, but his spelling has vastly improved since taking these minerals. He also says his thought processes feel clearer and not so disjointed.

Like I said, don't know much about any of this, but autism does seem to be almost a new epidemic.

But the thing is, thirty years ago, you had 8 shots, now you have like 24. And in CA it's illegal to send your kids to school without the shots, including the chicken pox vaccine, which was only approved like ten years ago.

I don't know if it's the shots, or not, and I do think the increase in "geekdom" parenting could have something to do with it, which is why it's so high here in Silicon Valley, but I sure wish they'd find out. CA schools are bankrupt as it is!! They have to be willing to change something, and that's something the medical field is very reluctant about.

Yikes! That's a lot of vaccines. I guess things have changed a lot since I was a kid. I didn't even know until last year that there was a chicken pox vaccine. How can kids not have a chicken pox story to share? That's like a rite of passage in childhood.

I know vaccines have always freaked me out a little. How can it be good to put all those chemicals in our bodies? I know the potential of not having a vaccination can be even scarier, but it does have to make you wonder. My husband was just diagnosed with a rare auto immune disorder called Wegener's Granulomatosis and started chemo a week ago to put it into remission. The doctor keeps talking about what they're going to give him later after he's off the cytoxin (year, not good when the word "toxin" is in the name of the medicine you're taking). The doctor gets all reassuring, "it'll be good when we move him to this other drug because it's so much less toxic. Less toxic? Less toxic? Oh goody, I can hardly wait. But sometimes, that's just what you have to do. There are no other options for treatment with what he has, and fifty years ago before they were using chemo, everybody died. So I'm just grateful that they can do something. Still, I don't like that they're making his body well by pumping him full of toxic chemicals.
