Girls Write Out
Friday, November 20, 2009
I'm going to post about pain today, since that is uppermost on my mind. My home girls are coming to pick me up for our class reunion pajama party getaway, and I'm all packed, cleaned up and ready. My shoulder is killing me, even with percocet on board, so I'm really, really wanting my girlfriends to get here and get me started laughing. Oh, by the way, my shoulder surgery went fine, I'm healing quickly and overdoing it, hence the pain.

When I was talking to the nurse the other day after the surgery, and they were pushing the morphine, I asked her what we could do besides drugs to get rid of the pain. She looked at me as if she thought the morphine was making me crazy. But I was serious. I know the breathing technique--in through the nose, out through the mouth--and I know accupuncture is supposed to help. But at that moment, I needed something more. Then we started talking about something else--can't remember what it was--and I started laughing. Instant pain relief. Laughter really does work. I'm not sure why. Screaming also does the job, but it's a little more irritating to the vocal cords and to the people around you, so laughter is my med of choice.

I've found that when I'm depressed, hurt or angry, if there is anything that can make me laugh, that, too, eases the pain. So laughter not only eases physical pain, but emotional, as well. What would we do without laughter in this world?

What about you? What helps ease the pain in your life?

Turn on a good CD, get the family and dance around the kitchen. Fast music works best to start with.

Then after the kids get bored and wonder off, a nice slow song to dance close with the hubby is a nice way to wind down.

P.S. This also gets me in the cleaning mood. The fast song that is. The slow songs are "personal"!

For shoulder pain, a good warm shower.

For back pain, ICY-HOT patches (the large ones for large areas)

For knee pain, Icy Hot patches (large ones cut in half, if both knees are bothering you, you have only used one patch.)

I have that when I am emotionally or mentally stressed that listening to my favorite faith music, being with loved ones or closed friends or reading my favorite Christian authors' books will help raise my spirits and bring me around. When I am hurting physically, I have a herb-filled pad that goes in either the microwave or the freezer (depending on the type of pain) that works wonders.

Seriously, a good book, and I'm not just saying that!

I have taken so many things from books, but that they are my med of choice for stress, getting away from it all, and enhancing free time! When I have a headache or watery eyes with a cold and can't read in bed, that is a TOTALLY WASTED illness! :-)

Definitely laughter.

All right, made it home from the getaway, and you guys are right. Good friends help with pain relief. So does reading--though our entertainment of choice together was movies while eating. I had forgotten how little I eat until I get together with my friends and rediscover chocolate and bread and nuts...and nut just the nuts that make me laugh, but the nuts that go crunch. Frozen peas worked, too. I just put them on my shoulder and was able to cut down some on the pain meds.

Thanks for the input. There are ways besides narcotics to ease the pain.

HI!

So glad you were able to go with your friends but am amazed you were able to go! You are a far better woman than I -- I didn't get out of the house for two weeks after shoulder surgery and that was for my doc appt.

I think movies, laughter (great!) or listening to praise music really helps. I also have found that using the computer takes the pain away -- except for shoulder pain, of course. Then, it can make it worse!

I am praying for you -- please don't overdo, as you will just have a prolonged recovery. I have found it just isn't worth it.

Let your great husband baby you for awhile and watch some movies together. It will help for a couple of hours--at least.

Thanks for that advice, Cheri. You are so right--catching up on email isn't smart right now. Also--quitting pain meds cold turkey--No way! Really bad move for me today, especially with Mel working tonight and three whiney, clingy kitties wanting outside where the coyotes are calling. Ugh...Percocet, take me away...

LOL, take the meds and then save the kitties! God gave us medicine for a reason, also it keeps the pain from building up to an intolerable level. Give yourself a break, it has only been a few days!

The cats are safe, meds on board like vitamins, and all is right with this Monday. Still a little worried about
Denise...hope that flu flees her area!
